Reviews

  • BAFICI 2020 Review. Daniel Cholakian for SUBJETIVA
“A police comedy that encourages something that many do not dare to do: far from locally reproducing locally the traditional keys of the genre, as if we were in Los Angeles or New York, the film proposes an extreme adaptation of the “noir” to the city of Montevideo…there are many of the key characteristcs of Uruguay-style narrative: an almost surreal humor – a side product of Uruguay’s strong cultural relationship with British culture -; the normalization of certain strange situations; the stripped-down performances; and a particular way of constructing the mystery route, which refers to the master Mario Levrero in novels such as “El alma de Gardel” or “Nick Carter” (in whom Carmen Vidal could perfectly be inspired).” [Full Review in Spanish]

  • Victoria Malter Terrada for CALIGARI
“With an air of noir cinema, the aroma of pizza and marijuana, with hints of Karausmaki, the Coen brothers and Torrente, Eva Dans invites us to walk a path in search for a certain personal achievement. The debut feature marks a good beginning for the young filmmaker who manages to caress with meek hands issues that concern society today, such as the high rates of femicide in Latin America. Because Carmen’s, after all, is also a feminist struggle.”

  • Carmen Vidal mujer detective llega a salas uruguayas. LATAM CINEMA
“Carmen Vidal, female detective” revisits cinema noir in a gray Montevideo and from a Latin American and contemporary perspective, mixing tragedy and humor. [Full Review in Spanish]

  • Pablo Stoll, Uruguayan film director, known for WHISKY and 25 WATTS
“If WHISKY and 25 WATTS had had a depressive detective daughter addicted to pizza, she would be called Carmen Vidal”
