Synopsis

THE LONG CUBAN NIGHT is a testament to the power of art and memory in the face of silencing. It shows how the internet cracked the regime’s monolithic control, allowing marginalized voices to narrate firsthand the violence, fear, and hope of a nation. It is the story of a group of artists who turned their cell phones into weapons of resistance.

About this documentary

Through testimonies and live broadcasts made mostly with cell phones, THE LONG CUBAN NIGHT sheds light on three crucial events in recent Cuban history: the hunger strike carried out in November 2020 by a group of ARTivists from the San Isidro Movement (MSI); the spontaneous demonstration that took place on the 27th of that same month in front of the Ministry of Culture, which gave rise to the 27N civic opposition movement; and the historic popular protests of July 11, 2021 (11J), in which thousands of Cubans took to the streets and faced brutal repression. Without a thorough understanding of these events, it is impossible understand what is going on in Cuba today.

This documentary, along with other recent films that address the situation of freedom of expression and human rights in Cuba, seeks to question the official narrative, offering an alternative in which social and political tensions are brought into view.

CUBA Y LA NOCHE es un testimonio del poder del arte y de la memoria frente al silenciamiento. De cómo la internet abrió una grieta en el control monolítico del régimen, permitiendo que voces marginadas narraran en primera persona la violencia, el miedo y la esperanza de un país. Es la historia de un grupo de artistas que convirtió sus teléfonos móviles en armas de resistencia.

Sobre este documental

CUBA Y LA NOCHE narra, a través de testimonios y transmisiones en vivo realizadas mayoritariamente con teléfonos móviles, tres sucesos cruciales en la historia reciente de Cuba: la huelga de hambre llevada a cabo en noviembre de 2020 por un grupo de ARTivistas del Movimiento San Isidro (MSI); la manifestación espontánea ocurrida el 27 de ese mismo mes frente al Ministerio de Cultura, que dio origen al movimiento cívico opositor 27N; y las históricas protestas populares del 11 de julio de 2021 (11J), en las que miles de cubanos salieron a la calle y enfrentaron una brutal represión. Sin una cabal compresión de estos hechos es imposible decodificar la Cuba actual.

Este documental, junto con otras obras recientes que abordan la situación de la libertad de expresión y los derechos humanos en Cuba, plantea una alternativa a la narrativa oficial cubana, ofreciendo una perspectiva descarnada de la realidad social y política de la isla.
