El trueno y el viento

a film by Jorge Soliño

USA – Cuba | documentary | color | Spanish | 98 min | 2022

Synopsis

Cuban music has traditionally flirted with spicy humor. A master in channeling Cuban popular soul with fully charged lyrics reflecting the trials and contradictions of everyday life, Pedro Luis became a household name in Cuba in the 70’s and 80’s. Irked by his witty social commentary, in the nineties his music was banned from the state-run media —which in Cuba meant all media. Despite the government’s efforts to silence him, his songs and poetry spread from hand to hand inside and outside Cuba, which is why Pedro Luis affirms that the artist is thunder and the people are wind. This is his story.

About Pedro Luis Ferrer

Such has been the international success story of Buena Vista Social Club that most people can’t see past these octogenarian superstars when it comes to Cuban music. However, for most of Cuba’s population, there is a very different musical landscape that includes hip-hop, reggaeton, and heavy metal, not to mention contemporary folk troubadours such as Pedro Luis Ferrer, a singer-songwriter who paints surreal snapshots of Cuban life in his own, particular rustico flavor – a sound that Ferrer recently described as “music without make-up”.

His favored instrument is the tres, a guitar-like three double-stringed instrument, which Ferrer describes as “the basis of Cuban music. [It] is derived from the laud, an instrument of Arabic origin that arrived in Cuba from Spain. For me, the tres and the Bata drums (brought to Cuba by African slaves) synthesize all the history of our music.”

His discography includes the albums Pedro Luis Ferrer (EGREM), Debajo de mi voz (EGREM), En espuma y arena (EGREM), 100% cubano (Carapacho Productions), Pedro Luis Ferrer(Caliente Records), Rustico (ESCONDIDA, Ultra Records), and Natural (ESCONDIDA, Ultra Records).

Sinopsis
