Juan of the dead

a film by Alejandro Brugués

Synopsis

As Havana is overflowing with zombies hungry for human flesh, the official media informs the world that all the disorder is being caused by dissidents paid off by the United States. Everyone is seized by panic until Juan comes to the rescue: he discovers he can kill the living dead by destroying their brains and decides to start up a small business under the slogan ‘we kill your loved ones’. Taking on the living dead, Juan manages to make a little bit of pocket money. Zombie movies travel to a still unconquered setting, Havana, in a horror-comedy laced with a social criticism that’s as hilarious as it is bloody.

More about the movie

Juan of the Dead became a cult film hit and has been an underground favorite among horror- and zombie-film fans since it premiered in September 2011 at the Toronto International Film Festival. Winning praise for its offbeat humor and deft manipulation of the horror genre—especially as a satirical commentary on contemporary Cuban life—it has been a film festival stalwart and had picked up audience awards across the globe.

After winning the audience award at the 2011 Havana Film Festival, it was announced at the Miami Film Festival, and soon became the hottest ticket in town, selling out its initial 1,700-seat screening weeks in advance. It ended up winning the Lexus Audience Award, becoming the only film ever to bypass political controversies to win audiences on both the Cubans who reside on the island and the ones in Florida.

The film was sold to more than two dozen countries, including the US, where it was released by Focus Features.

Sinopsis
