Bio

Born in Havana, in 1977.

Maverick filmmaker who has been working outside of the mainstream (both commercial and art-house) many times as a one-man crew since he made his first short at age 17 with an old VHS camcorder. This short granted him admission at the International Film School of San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba (EICTV). He gathered several awards in his country with experimental shorts films such as: Bailar sobre agujas (1999), Nice Going (1999), and Clase z tropical (2000) among others.

In 2001, he was given a scholarship to the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute in New York, where Coyula made his first feature: Red Cockroaches (2003) for less than $2000 over a two-year period, which has won 20 awards at International film festivals and was hailed by Variety as “A triumph of technology in the hands of a visionary with know-how…”

Coyula has usually funded his work through grants and private investors who serve as executive and associate producers of his films. In 2010, the Sundance Film Festival premiered his film Memorias del desarrollo (2010), follow up to the Cuban classic Memories of Underdevelopment (1968), based on the follow up novel by Cuban writer Edmundo Desnoes, also author of the original. The film gathered 20 awards and was chosen as the Best Cuban Film of the year by the International Film Guide. In 2009 Coyula was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship.

His next project was the documentary Nadie (2017) centered around dissident Cuban poet Rafael Alcides and his relationship with the Cuban revolution.

Corazón azul (2021) was filmed underground for over a decade, until its premiere at the Moscow International Film Festival in 2021, before winning the HFPA Award at the Guadalajara Film Festival.

He has presented his work and given talks at several American universities over the years, including Yale, Princeton, Tulane, Emerson, Cornell UW, UM, and Rice, among others.

He has also published the novels “Mar Rojo, Mal Azul” in 2013, “La Isla Vertical” in 2022, and “Matar el Realismo” in 2024.

His work is banned in Cuba.

Bio

Miguel Coyula (La Habana, 1977) es un escritor y realizador cubano que ha desarrollado su obra de manera totalmente underground, él mismo a cargo de la dirección, producción, guión y montaje. Con 17 años, hizo su primer corto con una vieja cámara VHS y gracias a él fue admitido en la Escuela Internacional de Ciney TV de San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba (EICTV) de donde se graduó de la Especialidad de Dirección. Realizó varios cortos con los cuales recibió numerosos premios en su país. En 2001, recibió una beca para el Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute de Nueva York. Fue allí donde, con menos de $2000 Coyula hizo su primer largometraje: CUCARACHAS ROJAS (2003) ganador de 23 premios en festivales internacionales. Su segunda película, MEMORIAS DEL DESARROLLO (2010), una re-lectura del clásico cubano “Memorias del subdesarrollo” (1968), basado en la novela del escritor cubano Edmundo Desnoes, tuvo una enorme repercusión nacional e internacional. Tuvo su premiere en Sundance, ganó 20 premios su tercer largometraje y su primer documental. En 2021 presentó CORAZÓN AZUL, un film de ficción que demoró 10 años en ser filmado y que tuvo su premiere mundial en el Festival de Moscú. El trabajo de Coyula ha sido ampliamente debatido en círculos académicos de los EUA. Ha sido invitado ha presentar su obra y ha dado charlas en varias universidades estadounidenses a lo largo de los años, entre ellas Yale, Princeton, Tulane, Emerson, Cornell UW, UM y Rice, entre otros. En 2010 ganó una beca Guggenheim. Ha publicado las novelas: “Mar Rojo, Mal Azul” en 2013, “La Isla Vertical” en 2022 y “Matar el Realismo” en 2024.

Miguel Coyula (Havana, 1977) é um escritor e cineasta cubano que tem desenvolvido sua obra de maneira inteiramente underground, ele próprio à cargo da direção, produção, roteiro e edição de seus filmes. Com 17 anos, fez seu primeiro curta-metragem com uma velha câmera VHS e assim foi admitido na Escola Internacional de Cine y TV de San Antonio de los Baños, (EICTV), de onde ele se formou na especialidade de Direção. Dirigiu alguns curtas-metragens com os quais recebeu inúmeros prêmios em seu país. Em 2001, ganhou uma bolsa para o Lee Strasberg theater Institute Lee de Nova York. Foi ali que com menos de US $ 2000 ele fez o seu primeiro longa-metragem: RED COCKROACHES| CUCARACHAS ROJAS (2003). O filme foi vencedor de 23 prêmios em festivais internacionais. Seu segundo longa, MEMORIAS DEL DESARROLLO (2010), é uma releitura do clássico cubano “Memórias do Subdesenvolvimento” (1968), baseado no romance do escritor cubano Edmundo Desnoes. I filme estreou no Sundance e teve um enorme repercussão internacional, ganhando 20 prémios. NADIE, seu terceiro longa-metragem é seu primeiro documentário. Em 2021 apresentou seu terceiro longa de fição CORAÇÃO AZUL que levou 10 anos em fase de filmagem. A obra de Coyula tem sido amplamente discutida nos círculos acadêmicos nos EUA. Ele foi convidado a apresentar seu trabalho e tem dado palestras em várias universidades americanas ao longo dos anos, incluindo Yale, Princeton, Tulane, Emerson, Cornell UW, UM e Rice, entre outras. Em 2010, ele ganhou uma bolsa da Fundação Guggenheim. Tem publicado os romances : “Mar Rojo, Mal Azul” em 2013, “La Isla Vertical” em 2022 e “Matar el Realismo” em 2024.
